State Cancer Surveillance Study for Lewiston and Porter Released

In five instances the New York State Cancer Surveillance Study for Lewiston and Porter shows “statistically significant” elevated cancer rates.

1) Investigation of Cancer Incidence in the Area Surrounding the Niagara Falls Storage Site and the former Lake Ontario Ordnance Works, Towns of Lewiston and Porter, Niagara County, New York, 1991-2000 states that there are “statistically significant” elevated rates of cancer in the Lewiston Porter area:

            A) Prostate Cancer in Men
            B) Testicular Cancer in Men
            C) Breast Cancer Women
            D) Urinary Bladder Cancer in women
            E) Germ cell, trophoblastic, and other gonadal neoplasms among children

3) The United States Department of Health says, “PCBs can still be released to the environment from hazardous waste sites.”

4) The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that all landfills leak

"First, even the best liner and leachate collection system will ultimately fail due to natural deterioration, and recent improvements in MSWLF containment technologies suggest that releases may be delayed by many decades at some landfills. For this reason, the Agency is concerned that while corrective action may have already been triggered at many facilities, 30 years may be insufficient to detect releases at other landfills."
